There has been a lot of attention in the media about vaporizing as of late. Health officials in the US have been reporting recent cases of respiratory illnesses, so far, the CDC is suggesting that it could be linked to vaping but there has been no concrete evidence to support this yet.
Vitamin E Acetate
A common denominator in the products that have been tested is a chemical compound called Vitamin E Acetate. This oil is commonly used as a filler/diluent for vaporizing nicotine or cannabis. Vitamin E is found naturally in certain foods, such as canola oil, olive oil and almonds. Vitamin E acetate, is commonly available as a nutritional supplement and is used in topical skin treatments. It is not known to cause harm when ingested as a vitamin supplement or applied to the skin. The name sounds harmless, experts said, but it’s molecular structure could make it hazardous when inhaled. Its oil-like properties could be associated with the kinds of respiratory symptoms that many patients have reported: cough, shortness of breath and chest pain.
Research Findings about Vaping
As of September 4, 2019, Health Canada states that they have not yet seen any such cases in Canada, although they have issued a warning to look out for signs of respiratory problems. You should contact your Physician if you vaporize regularly and have any persisting symptoms.
It could be that vaporizing products made in Canada are made with different ingredients? Perhaps not as many products made in Canada have the Vitamin E compound in the vaporizing liquid? So far it is too early to tell and there are a lot of variables that have not yet been looked at such as frequency of use, ingredients in the product, age, current health issues etc. Also the way users puff, how long they puff and what they puff all play a role. We do not yet know how this behavior affects how much of each substance vapers consume over the course of their daily lives, but researchers have reason to believe it is significant.
Here’s what CDC says about vaping being linked to lung diseases: “We do not yet know the specific cause of these lung injuries. The investigation has not identified any specific e-cigarette or vaping product (devices, liquids, refill pods, and/or cartridges) or substance that is linked to all cases.” How that might affect vapers’ bodies isn’t yet clear. “When inhaled, these compounds will persist in the body for some time, activating irritant pathways,” said Sven-Eric Jordt, an associate professor of anesthesiology at Duke University School of Medicine and a senior author of the paper, in the press release. “Over time, this mild irritation could cause an inflammatory response.” Officials are not yet certain whether it is vaping itself or the Vitamin E compound/bad product causing the health problems.
Education and Awareness
In any case, the best advice for the consumer would be to educate themselves on the ingredients of the vaporizing product they are looking to purchase and to make sure that it is 100% Cannabis oil. Our high quality CBD Oil cartridge that we sell online is lab tested so you can rest easy.
E-juice and Cannabis Oil
There is a big difference between e-cigarette juice and cannabis vaporizing oil. High quality Cannabis oil has a thicker consistency since it does not have the filler substance (Vitamin E acetate) that a lot of e-juices have. Electronic cigarette juice is runny and has a liquid-like consistency along with harmful additives like flavouring. E-liquids are generally made from a combination of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. And the proof is in the pudding, or in this case, the pudding-flavored vape juice.
The selling points of the “safety” of e-liquids have been that the products contain relatively few ingredients and, of the ingredients used, many are on the FDA’s Generally Recognized As Safe list Trusted Source (GRAS). Aldehydes, organic components often associated with aromas (such as those of berries), and other additives used for flavoring on the GRAS list are understood to be safe for food — not smoking or vaping. Yet e-liquids are rife with them.
Some ingredients on the GRAS list include: cinnamaldehyde imparts the sweet spicy taste of cinnamon; vanillin for vanilla notes; and benzaldehyde is the unmistakable taste of almonds. Other common flavoring elements such as diacetyl give a creamy or buttery depth to e-liquids. Previous studies have looked at the effects of these ingredients when subjected to heat or vaporization and found that they can cause the formation of formaldehyde and other cancer-causing chemicals, in addition to causing irritation and inflammation of the lungs. This forms the liquid base to which additional additives such as flavorings. Based on this knowledge, future regulatory efforts should target specifically the more reactive chemicals added to e-liquids.
Although more research needs to come out on what exactly is causing these health issues for people in both Canada and the United States, we as consumers need to know what ingredients are in the vaporizing cartridges that we purchase. Our Goo Goodness cannabis oil vaporizing cartridges that we sell on this website are made from pure cannabis oil with no additives or Vitamin E Acetate. We ensure this by making sure that the products are lab tested and flavoured with natural products from our supplier. All our CBD Oil products are high quality, including our CBD Oil vaping cartridge, which is made with 100% cannabis oil that contains 1000 mg/1 gram/1 mL of the finest chromatographic distillate honey oil. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any more inquiries about this product or if you are interested in purchasing one to try for yourself. In this forever changing industry, education and awareness are the most important thing.
As a side note, vaporizing is not as good for you as breathing clean air but as we all know, moderation is key in this case. Vaporizing may not be right for you if you have a history of pulmonary illnesses and are currently pregnant.
